Vehicle Title FAQs

After I pay off my vehicle loan, when will I get my title?

7 days after paying off your vehicle loan, your title will be released and mailed to you by the DMV. If we have the title in-house, then our Title Department will mail it to you.

How can I get a copy of my title?

The Title Department may print an ELT Record for you. If you need an actual copy of the title, we would have to request a paper title through the DMV unless we have the title in-house. There may be a charge depending on how the title is filed with the DMV. Contact the Title Department for one of these options by calling 804-323-6000, ext. 1710 or emailing lendingoperationstitle@vacu.org. If VACU is not listed as lienholder, you can order a replacement title on DMV’s website.

How can I get a lien release letter?

You may contact us to submit a request to the Title Department or contact the Title Department at 804-323-6000, ext. 1710 or email lendingoperationstitle@vacu.org.

How do I add a name to a title?

  2. Copy of orders, if military
  3. Copy of current insurance coverage
  4. Requirements from shipping company and customs
  5. Contact information for the member including new address
  6. Contact information for the shipping company

How do I get my title to register a vehicle in another state?

In most states, you’d present your current registration to DMV, which begins the process of transferring the title and registration to that state. The state can mail or fax VACU a request for the title we currently hold. In some cases, you may be responsible for delivering the form to us, as some states have the form available to print from a state website. We encourage you to review the state’s New Resident procedures for complete details.

*New York and Rhode Island ONLY*
If the you are requesting that a title be transferred to New York or Rhode Island, VACU requires a written and signed request stating you wish to register in that state. Please include the make, model, year and VIN for the vehicle, your full name and the address where certified copies of the title and a permission letter can be sent. State Change requests can be emailed to lendingoperationstitle@vacu.org or faxed to 804-267-1438.
