Striking Out Hunger: VACU and FredNats Team Up for the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank

VACU team poses with large check in support of Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank

Virginia Credit Union (VACU) and the Fredericksburg Nationals (FredNats) have once again teamed up to help fight hunger in the Central Rappahannock Region. On Tuesday evening, the organizations presented two checks for $5,000 each to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, bringing the two-year tally up to more than $21,000 and over 43,000 meals.

The contributions are part of the Strike Out Hunger effort, which is based on $5 per strike out. The final amount will be determined at the conclusion of the baseball season, but the contributions are expected to continue to grow. VACU plans to continue the Strike Out Hunger program in future years.

According to Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank President & CEO Dan Maher, "This campaign means that we are recognized as a leader in the community that other community leaders want to partner with. To be chosen by Virginia Credit Union and the Fred Nats as the primary partner for the Strikeout Hunger Campaign shows that both organizations believe in the powerful impact of our work and we are grateful that they are willing to invest in our mission to address hunger in the community. Hunger is a community-wide problem that demands a community-wide response, so having two widely respected community leaders like Virginia Credit Union and the Fred Nats show their commitment to addressing hunger sends a great message to the entire community."

In addition to donating money, employees of VACU and the FredNats support the Food Bank by volunteering in the Food Bank's warehouse, community kitchen, and other programs. VACU also has a similar program with the Richmond Flying Squirrels to support Feed More in Richmond.

"We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Fredericksburg Nationals to help fight hunger in the Central Rappahannock Region," said VACU President & CEO Chris Shockley. "At VACU, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve, and we are proud to support the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank in their mission to address hunger in the community."

The Strike Out Hunger effort is just one of the many ways that VACU and the FredNats are making a positive impact in the Fredericksburg region. As a financial cooperative serving more than 320,000 members, VACU offers a variety of affordable banking services, loans, mortgages, and free financial education resources, with a focus on helping people be more confident with their finances.
