Virginia Credit Union President/CEO Chris Shockley has been named to Virginia Business magazine’s prestigious Virginia 500 listing, which recognizes the Commonwealth’s most influential leaders across business, government, politics, and education.

With more than $7.2 billion in assets, VACU serves almost 500,000 members through best-in- class digital banking services and a 39-branch network that stretches across the Greater Richmond area, the Roanoke and New River valleys, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Lynchburg, and Farmville.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of Virginia Credit Union’s people and the shared commitment of our staff, board volunteers, and leaders to building a mission-focused organization that helps members succeed and strengthens the communities we serve,” said Shockley. “As we look toward our 100th anniversary in 2028, we remain focused on doing right by our members and our people, because that is what drives sustainable growth, innovation, and meaningful, lasting community impact.”

Under Shockley’s leadership, VACU has garnered recognition for its workplace culture, financial education programs, community investment and charitable giving, and member- focused growth:

  • VACU received the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award in 2026 for the fourth consecutive year and earned Gallup’s strengths-based culture recognition for the first time, making it one of only six organizations worldwide to receive both honors.
  • The credit union contributed $1.5 million last year to community partners, area schools, and local nonprofits.
  • VACU’s nationally recognized financial education programs reached more than 131,000 students and adults last year.
  • One of Virginia’s Top 25 mortgage lenders every year since 2019, VACU funded more than $387 million in mortgage loans in 2025, supported by $1.5 million in down payment assistance and almost $520,000 in Welcome Home credits and discounts for eligible members.
  • VACU was named Organization of the Year by the Institute for Financial Literacy, receiving the Institute’s 2026 Excellence in Financial Literacy Education Award for its exceptional innovation, dedication, and commitment to financial education.
