Through this long-running partnership with the Richmond-based minor league baseball team, VACU donates $5 to Feed More for every strikeout recorded by Flying Squirrels pitchers during the season. "Food assistance and addressing local food insecurity remain central to VACU's community engagement efforts," said VACU President/CEO Chris Shockley. "We're proud to support Feed More's critical work in our community and to continue our commitment to addressing one of the most pressing needs facing our neighbors." VACU and Feed More are proud partners dating back more than 24 years. During these two decades, financial donations — Including contributions from the Strike Out Hunger campaign — have totaled more than $143,000, providing the equivalent of 572,000 meals to those in need. "Virginia Credit Union's steadfast support of this community is something to behold,” said Feed More President and CEO Dennis Hatchett. “The Strike Out Hunger campaign, and all their many other efforts over the past 25 years, make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve – providing more than a half million meals for our neighbors in need right here in Central Virginia. We are beyond grateful for their enduring partnership and generosity.” Beyond the Strike Out Hunger partnership, VACU actively supports several other organizations promoting food security. The credit union recently donated $15,000 to Richmond-based Shalom Farms, continuing its partnership with the urban farm organization. Last year, VACU and Shalom Farms celebrated a significant milestone: The credit union's total donations to the organization since their partnership began in 2018 reached $100,000. VACU also donated $5,000 this year to the Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center, which serves families throughout Chesterfield County. Additionally, VACU employees actively volunteer at local food banks, community kitchens, and urban farms. From January 2024 through July 2025, VACU volunteers have contributed 594 hours of service to support food security efforts in local communities. VACU focuses its community engagement mission on four key areas: food security, financial education, children's health and wellness, and community well-being. This targeted approach enables the credit union to maximize its impact while supporting meaningful causes that benefit both members and communities.
