Virginia Credit Union, Fredericksburg Nationals Partner to ‘Strike Out Hunger’ with $11,000 Donation to Area Food Bank

Virginia Credit Union (VACU) and the Fredericksburg Nationals team present check donation to local food bank

Virginia Credit Union and the Fredericksburg Nationals are marking another year of their successful Strike Out Hunger partnership with a combined $11,000 donation to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.

VACU makes a $5 donation to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank for every strikeout recorded by the FredNats’ pitchers during the course of the season. The FredNats matched this year’s $5,500 donation from VACU. Earlier this year, VACU donated $5,000 to the food bank, separate from the Strike Out Hunger program.

"We are incredibly grateful to the FredNats for joining us in support of one of our most valued community partners, the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank," said Virginia Credit Union President/CEO Chris Shockley. "The food bank’s incredible work is addressing food insecurity throughout our region, and we’re proud to aid their many initiatives and programs that reach families and individuals in need.”

Now in its fourth year, the Strike Out Hunger campaign is one of many VACU initiatives to aid the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, which serves the city of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford, as well as some areas in Orange County. During their partnership, VACU and the FredNats have contributed $43,710 to the food bank, which equates to 87,420 meals for our neighbors in need, based on the food bank’s calculation of 50 cents per meal.

“At the FredNats, we believe the impact we make off the field is just as important as what happens on it,” said Fredericksburg Nationals General Manager Robert Perry. “Partnering with Virginia Credit Union to Strike Out Hunger allows us to turn every strikeout into something bigger, resulting in a real difference for families across our community. We’re proud to stand alongside Virginia Credit Union and the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank in the fight against hunger.”

VACU members and employees also support area food banks, community kitchens, and urban farms through food drives, volunteer workdays, and other fundraisers, as part of the credit union’s community engagement efforts to promote food security across its service footprint. From 2024 through mid-year 2025, VACU employees have volunteered 594 hours in support of community organizations fighting hunger.

"Teamwork and partnership are essential to the work we do," said Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank President/CEO Dan Maher. "Virginia Credit Union and the FredNats show great teamwork and great community awareness in collaborating on the Strike Out Hunger program. We are honored to partner with them to make their community spirit tangible to those who rely on our services."
