VACU's Support for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Exceeds $200,000

Virginia Credit Union contributed more than $21,300 to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals this year, the result of employee outreach, a corporate donation and a sponsorship with VCU basketball.

The local hospital has been the credit union’s employee-designated charity of choice for a decade. Over the last 10 years, Virginia Credit Union and its employees have contributed more than $200,000 to advance pediatric health services at Children’s Hospital through research, training, and uncompensated care.

Because employee outreach activities were curtailed in 2020 due to COVID-19, Virginia Credit Union made good on a commitment from its employee-directed community outreach committee. In a typical year, the employee committee raises funds through casual day fundraisers and other activities, and Virginia Credit Union makes a matching gift equal to the employee effort.

Although employee fundraising activities were cancelled in 2020, Virginia Credit Union made a $20,000 contribution to CMN at the end of December, similar to its annual gift in recent years. At the end of the basketball season, Virginia Credit Union followed up on the year-end gift with an additional contribution based on the number of assists made by the men’s and women’s VCU Rams basketball teams. Based on 652 assists, Virginia Credit Union is contributing an additional $1,304 to CMN.

Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU is a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital and provides a full range of pediatric services for children.

“Virginia Credit Union employees care deeply about the community and those in need. They recognize Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU as a vital partner for our community, providing state-of-the-art medical care as it expands services and facilities,” said Chris Shockley, Virginia Credit Union President/CEO. “We are pleased to support CMN and its care for families in our community.”

A member-owned financial cooperative with more than 300,000 members, Virginia Credit Union provides a variety of affordable banking services, loans, mortgages, and free financial education resources with a focus on helping people be more confident with their finances. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA.
