VACU believes in the power of volunteerism to strengthen communities, advance the missions of local nonprofits and community partners, and create positive change. The credit union’s employees have volunteered 716 hours to various community causes this year, with dozens of other volunteer initiatives to come. “So many of our local nonprofits and community groups depend on the time and talents of volunteers to make their work possible and to amplify the impact of their efforts in the community,” notes VACU Product Specialist for Cards and Payments Saqueya Moore, a board member and volunteer for GiSTEM, a Richmond-area nonprofit focused on preparing young people for careers in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields. “VACU is committed to the well-being of our communities, and our volunteer efforts are one more way we demonstrate that commitment.” Moore is one of many VACU employees whose volunteer efforts are making a difference in our communities and across the Commonwealth. Our own Cherry Dale, Senior Vice President Financial Education, was recently elected chair of the Virginia Council on Women, a council in the executive branch that advises the governor and General Assembly on matters pertaining to women and ways to improve their educational, professional, cultural, and governmental status within the Commonwealth. Tori Filas, Senior Financial Education Specialist, also recently joined the board of directors for the Richmond Public Library Foundation, which works to raise money in support of the Richmond Public Library and its core programs, including its literacy initiatives, concert series, and summer intern program. Mark Creason, Director of Financial Partnerships, is a longtime volunteer for a host of local organizations, including Virginia Ability, a nonprofit that educates employers about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. Last year, he was appointed to the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism, which promotes volunteer and community. Last year, VACU provided more than $1 million in financial support for various charitable and community causes, volunteered 2,500 hours at local nonprofits and organizations, and reached more than 100,000 individuals through its financial education initiatives.
