A portion of those donations is the result of the credit union’s “VACU Assists” partnerships with the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Virginia Tech and Virginia Commonwealth University, with the credit union contributing to the two children’s hospitals for every assist recorded by the schools’ basketball teams during their regular season games."On the court, an assist is about creating opportunity. Off the court, it's about creating impact. Virginia Tech women's basketball is proud to partner with Virginia Credit Union, where every assist we have on the court results in a $5 donation to Carilion Children's Hospital in Roanoke,” said Megan Duffy, Virginia Tech women's basketball head coach. “Together, every extra pass helps us make a meaningful difference for children and families in our community." Carilion Children's Hospital provides the most comprehensive system of pediatric care in western Virginia, delivering advanced health care close to home for infants, children, and adolescents. Services include the region's only pediatric Level 1 trauma center, a pediatric surgery unit, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, an inpatient unit designed exclusively for children, and the Child Life Program. Each year, the hospital treats more than 10,000 hospitalized children.“We are honored by this incredibly generous donation from Virginia Credit Union to our Child Life Program," said Dr. Andrew Herman, Chair, Department of Pediatrics. “Children experiencing illness and hospitalization are uprooted from their daily lives of play, family, and school, often facing confusing and frightening situations, which can be traumatic for kids. Our Child Life Specialists meet children where they are, providing comfort, emotional support, and play through games and creative activities while celebrating the individual child. Allowing children to hold onto their childhood joy and wonderment through trying times is so important for the healing process for the child and the entire family.”Virginia Credit Union and its Member One division are deeply committed to charitable giving and community engagement. In 2025, VACU and Member One donated almost $1.5 million to charitable groups, volunteered 2,100 hours at local nonprofits and community organizations, and reached more than 131,000 individuals through financial education initiatives.
