VACU Receives Gold Award for Mural Video

VACU's mural in downtown Richmond on 1st Street

An inspiring 4-minute documentary highlighting the work of Virginia Credit Union employees, members and the community to paint a downtown street mural has been recognized with a Gold Award from the Marketing Association of Credit Unions (MAC), a national group of credit union professionals.

The documentary captured the “VACU Paints RVA” event held last October in historic Jackson Ward as a partnership between Virginia Credit Union, Girls For A Change, HandsOn Greater Richmond, and artist Hamilton Glass of the UNITY Street Project.

Virginia Credit Union invited members, employees and the community to come together to paint the mural. Video and photographs from the event were shared on social media, and now the final documentary has taken the top video prize for large credit unions in the U.S. The awards were given out June 1 at the credit union marketing association’s annual conference.

Virginia Credit Union produced the video with footage from the event and interviews with participants before and after painting.

The colorful mural is on the side of a building along 1st Street at its intersection with E. Broad in Richmond. The community painting event involved more than 60 volunteers and supported the work of the Girls For A Change nonprofit group.

Girls For A Change works to inspire black girls and other girls of color to visualize their bright futures and potential. The organization works with youth to discover hidden talents, develop future potential, and focus on making social change in their communities.

A financial cooperative serving more than 265,000 members, Virginia Credit Union offers a variety of affordable banking services, loans, mortgages, and free financial education resources, with a focus on helping people be more confident with their finances. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA.
