Online Banking Security

Online Banking is a great convenience. But there are important precautions you should take to be safe when accessing your accounts online.

  • Use an up-to-date and reputable web browser on your PC or tablet.
  • Use the best anti-virus and firewall protection that you can afford and keep it up to date. Install an anti-spyware program and scan your computer regularly.
  • Beware of emails asking for confidential or personal information. Do not reply or enter any personal information, account numbers or passwords. Scammers make their phishing emails appear as if they are coming from legitimate companies. Suspicious emails should be reported immediately.
  • Don’t use Online Banking from a public or shared computer or someone else’s PC, which you can’t be sure is properly secured.
  • Avoid accessing Online Banking from public Wi-Fi connections. Scammers sometimes use the public Wi-Fi at airports, Internet cafés, etc., to steal information.
  • Don’t leave your computer unattended while logged on to Online Banking or other sites where you provide personal information.
  • Always log out when you are finished to properly end your session.
  • Disable automatic password-save features in the browsers and software you use to access the Internet.
  • Watch out for any unusual or unexpected windows that “pop up” during an Internet banking session. They could be a sign of malware on your computer designed to capture your information or track your keystrokes.
  • Be skeptical of emails that appear to be from friends, but don’t look or sound quite right. Crooks mine Facebook data to target individuals. Be wary of long links with random numbers or letters and information to download.
