The arrival of warm weather brings thoughts of summer vacation to mind. Want to take a summer trip without breaking the bank? Virginia Credit Union offers the following tips on being money-smart during your vacation:

  1. Do Your Research
Spend time in advance of your vacation comparing deals and researching available discounts. The more preparation you can put into your trip, the more control you’ll have over your costs for lodging, meals, attractions and transportation.
  2. Timing is Everything
Theme parks, hotels, and airlines have prices that often vary depending on the day of the week. Do some research and plan your trip accordingly. You’ll save money and avoid the crowds.
  3. Be Prepared
Wherever you travel, it’s always a good idea to carry multiple methods of payment with you: cash, debit cards, credit cards and traveler’s checks. If one isn’t accepted, you’ll have other ways to pay. If you’re headed outside your area or outside the U.S., it’s a good idea to let your bank or credit union know in advance to avoid any inconvenience when using your credit or debit card.
  4. Avoid Foreign Transaction Fees
Be aware that some credit cards can carry a 3-5 percent fee for transactions outside the U.S. Virginia Credit Union cards do not have foreign transaction fees. Be sure you know the rules for your card before you go.
  5. Budget for It
As with any financial matter, budgeting is key. Knowing how much your vacation will cost and setting those funds aside before you go is the best way to maximize your fun and minimize your financial worries. It’s a good idea to establish a regular program of saving for your next vacation. That puts you in control and ensures you’ll have funds available before you go.
