Virginia Credit Union wins awards for financial education and social responsibility
(Richmond, VA – August 27, 2014) Virginia Credit Union has been recognized with two first place awards by the statewide trade association for credit unions.
Sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League, the award programs recognize credit unions for outstanding financial education and community service efforts.
Virginia Credit Union won the Desjardins Youth Financial Education award for its partnership with the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia Credit Union Financial Education Director Cherry Hedges initiated the collaboration and taught a financial education program to more than 300 Girl Scouts in the Richmond and Fredericksburg areas in early 2014.
Virginia Credit Union was also recognized with first place in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award for its “VACU Assists” program to benefit Children’s Miracle Network and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. As Virginia Credit Union employees raised money and volunteered their time to support the hospital, a sponsorship with VCU Basketball helped to generate excitement and visibility. VACU pledged an additional $1 for every assist by the men’s and women’s Rams basketball teams, on top of employee contributions and a corporate match. The total value of VACU’s support exceeded $30,000.
Virginia Credit Union’s award applications were judged against entries from other large credit unions in Virginia. The two first place entries will now go on to be judged in a national competition organized by the Credit Union National Association.
A member-owned financial cooperative with more than 235,000 members, Virginia Credit Union is a leader in financial education programs for youth and adults. More than 13,000 adults and young people participated in free financial workshops and seminars offered by the credit union last year. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA.
