Virginia Credit Union established the scholarship program
in 1991 to help members of any age working toward their first undergraduate degree. Since it was established, the program has provided more than $1 million in scholarship support to student members of the credit union. The program honors Dot Hall and Jane Watkins, former presidents of Virginia Credit Union.
Scholarships are judged by a scholarship committee. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, work to help cover the cost of education, and an essay on financial responsibility.
Last year’s scholarship recipients included 18 rising college freshmen and 12 upperclassmen. All of the students were from Virginia and most are attending college in the state. Two-thirds of the awardees are from the Metro Richmond area, but there were also student recipients from Fredericksburg, Farmville, Northern Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley, and Southwest Virginia.
A financial cooperative serving more than 263,000 members, Virginia Credit Union offers a variety of affordable banking services, loans, mortgages, and free financial education resources, with a focus on helping people be more confident with their finances. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA.
