Lost or Stolen Purse or Wallet

In the event that your wallet or purse is lost or stolen, take these steps to minimize the risk and potential damage of identity theft. This list is also available in a printable PDF format.

  • Immediately file a police report in the jurisdiction where it was stolen. Get a copy in case your bank, credit card company or insurance company needs proof of the crime.

  • Cancel each credit card. Get new cards with new account numbers.

  • Call the fraud departments of the three major credit bureaus. Ask them to put a "fraud alert" on your account and add a "victim's statement" to your file requesting that creditors contact you by phone before opening new accounts in your name. Request copies of your reports and review them to make sure no fraudulent activity has occurred.

  • Report the loss to your credit union or bank if your wallet or purse contained account information, including account numbers, ATM cards or checks. Close checking and savings accounts and open new ones. Stop payments on outstanding checks.

  • Get a new debit card, account number and personal identification number (PIN) or password.

  • Report your missing driver's license to the department of motor vehicles and get a replacement license. When you get your new license, request that your social security number not be used as your driver’s license number.

  • Change the locks on your home and car if your keys were taken. Don't give an identity thief access to even more personal property and information.

  • Replace your Social Security card by calling the local Social Security office. You will not be issued a new social security number unless there is evidence that your number is being used by someone else.

  • Replace any medical and vehicle insurance cards.

  • Report the loss of any video or other rental cards. If you don't notify them, you may end up liable for changes for videos or other items that are rented and never returned.

  • After a few months, order new copies of your credit reports to verify that the changes you requested have occurred and that no new fraudulent accounts have been opened or unauthorized changes made to your existing accounts.

Please contact us if you have questions or we can help you in any way.
