ATM Safety
Here are some tips on how to stay safe when using an automated teller
machine (ATM).
- If possible, avoid using an ATM late at night or very early
in the morning.
- Before approaching the ATM, drive around the branch or facility
to ensure there are no suspicious persons loitering.
- If you spot anything suspicious, leave the area immediately
and report it to the police.
- Use only well lit ATMs in public places.
- Have your card and paperwork ready before approaching the ATM.
- Shield your personal identification number (PIN) from view
when entering the numbers.
- Don’t count your cash at the
ATM.
Walk up ATMs
- Don’t leave the car idling and
the door unlocked.
- Keep an eye on the ATM safety mirror to ensure nobody is coming
up behind you.
- Don’t approach the machine until
the person in front of you has completed their transaction
and left the machine.
Drive up ATMs
- Keep car doors locked and windows rolled up except when necessary
to access the ATM.
- Monitor the area around you to ensure nobody is approaching
your vehicle.
- Drive off if someone starts approaching.
