Umbrella liability insurance is so named because it acts like an umbrella, on top of your auto, homeowners or renters liability policies to provide extra protection.

Your standard homeowners or auto policy will provide you with liability coverage, up to a limit set in the policy, in the event of a claim against you. Once you reach the limit on your primary liability coverage, your umbrella policy would kick in.
