Chances are, you’re carrying more confidential information in your purse or wallet than you realize. Most people don’t think much about it, but what happens if that information is stolen? Will you know what to do and who to contact? Take some steps to prepare for the unexpected.

• Don't carry your Social Security card, birth certificate or passport in your wallet or purse unless you'll be needing them. This practice minimizes the amount of information a thief can steal.
   
• Weed out the cards you don't need to carry. This also minimizes the amount of information a thief can steal.
   
• Go through your wallet or purse and make a list of all the cards you carry, including the account numbers, contact information, and emergency procedures for each. Or if you prefer, photocopy everything in your wallet, front and back, so you know exactly who to call.

• Keep the list up to date and keep it in a safe, secure place at home where you will remember you have it.
